When death comes knocking (Eternal Glory) Pt. 2

‘I am sorry for your loss but his death is a blessing in disguise.’

“Are you stupid? I KNOW it was a blessing but right now that is the last thing I want to hear.  Don’t you get it? I knew it would be LONG before you even heard he was sick! Don’t you think I have wrestled with that more times than you can count? Do not even DARE tell me that.  You have no right what so ever.  If I hear that statement one more time, regardless who says it, I am going to flip out and it is not going to be good.”

To cover up the stunned look of disbelief on my face, I quickly found myself politely saying, “Thank you” and doing what I could to end that conversation right then and there instead of saying what was really on my mind.  Welcome to the majority of the way in which conversations started for me this past week.

To say it was an easy week, would be a straight up lie.  In reality, it was one of the hardest weeks that I have had in a long time and I found myself wrestling with the fact that I did not know what to do about it.  Just over a week ago, we buried my uncle.

A few weeks earlier, during a youth small group discussion on waiting on God, the question was raised, “What if we are waiting for something bad to happen?”  THAT is a good question.  I found myself stumbling for words so instead of even attempting to ‘sugar coat’ it, I was completely honest with the grade 10’s before me.  I shared that I was ‘waiting’ for a funeral.  That, short of a miracle, the entire family knew without a doubt a funeral was in our near future.  Needless to say, this got the groups attention very quickly and I knew that they could see the turmoil upon my face and within my heart.

Death is hard.  Death is very hard.  It is something that I don’t think any one of us will truly ever understand.  On one hand, we lose those we love and the thought of never seeing them again on earth scares us.  On the other hand our ‘goal’, as Jesus followers, IS to be WITH HIM in Eternal Glory (aka Heaven).  A physical death is truly the only way to experience life fullest with Him.

The morning of my uncle’s funeral, I was asked if I would be able to read his obituary.  I’ve done a lot of things in my life but reading my uncle’s obituary was never on my ‘bucket list’, or any list for that matter.  However when my aunt asked me if I could, I instantly replied “I’d be honoured too”.  The burial itself was small and it took place before the service.  Only family and close friends in attendance.  However, I know I’ll never be able to get the look on the grandkids face, out of my mind.  Combine that visual, with the sound of the dirt hitting the casket as my cousin took the first shovel of dirt to cover his dad’s grave, and I knew that my eyes would be in a constant state of ‘wet’ for the day.  Ironically enough, that morning also happened to be the first snow fall of the season as large flakes were falling from the Heavens.

We arrived at the church and I quickly realized that talking to people was the last thing I wanted to do in that moment.  I found my seat and starred up at the slide show before me.  Before I knew it, time came to share the obituary.  As I started to speak, I could feel my body shaking and my knees feeling like they wanted to give way.  No I wasn’t nervous of the 400+ people before me, I’ve spoken in front of large crowds before.  It was the reality of what I was doing, the reality of the situation before me, that suddenly ‘hit me like a ton of bricks’.  What struck me the most, was the impact one man had on the many lives before me and I found myself asking, “What do I want to be remembered for?  What sort of impact am I having right here, right now?  What am I doing to further the Kingdom of God right here and now?” All I know is that God heard my earlier pleads for steady words.

If I learned anything through this specific journey, it is that life is so fragile. However, the ripple effect that one life has, has the ability to rock this world locally and abroad.  Life is so precious and it is not something to be taken for granted for. In the end, we will be with Him in Eternity but the time we are given on earth is important.  Jesus came to bring us life and He wants us to live it to fullest.

Family

In the span of my 26 years of life, God has put some pretty incredible people in my life.

From early educators (public school and Sunday school alike) through university college professors.  From my days of being a youth looking up the youth leaders wondering ‘how they know all they know’, to now working alongside some of those same leaders who are still IN the same youth ministry- I can see God’s hand in it.  From to getting to know a family who moved to a struggling community simply to love on the people and help guide them through life, to spending a week with a missionary couple on a Northern Manitoba Native Fly-In only reserve, have helped reveal my love of missions to me.
God has given me the honour of getting to know incredible, ‘sold out’ people for Jesus, of all ages, languages, race, backgrounds, and nationalities across this globe.  From America, to Latin America. From Western Europe to Easter Europe.  From India/Nepal, South East Asia, Philippines, and Australia, down to multiple countries in southern Africa and many other places in between.  The list continues to grow.

Just when I think that there is ‘no way’ God will provide me with friends stronger than those I already have, friends (and friendships) that date back to the diaper age of life and high school life, He blows my mind with my college buddies.  Providing a community, and friends, to ‘meet me where I am at’ not only during those years, but to this very day.  Friends who will drive an hour simply to say hello and bring me starbucks.  He doesn’t stop there and goes even further when He has me traveling with a group of complete strangers who became ‘like family’ in a short span of 11 months.  Friendships that, no matter how far away we physically are from one another, who I know will always ‘have my back’, God has never ceased to amaze me

With all the incredible people that God has placed within my life, at home and abroad, I cannot forget those who share in the same bloodline as I do.  From my grandparents, to cousins, to my uncles and my aunts.  All have played a part in shaping who I am today.  Closer still, my immediate family that continues to grow.  What began as an immediate family of 5, grew to 6 through marriage and now 7, through the birth of my nephew last summer.  Yes, of course I when have my moments when I claim to be ‘adopted’ simply because of the uniqueness of those who God has immediately placed within my life.  Those that will always be there, simply because we ARE closely blood related, but that’s family right?  We are all unique, with different passions, hobbies, skills and personalities but that’s what makes us, us.

If God has taught me anything in my 26 years of life, is that the saying really is true…you CAN pick your friends (and sometimes they pick you) but you CANNOT pick your family.
Today, right now in this moment, I am thankful.  I am thankful for those God has forever placed in my life.  I am thankful for the lessons in which I have learned (and continue to learn) through them.  For the good times and the bad times.  Times in which we are all together around the supper table as a unit and for the emails (and photos) that continue to unite us even when we are physically apart.  It is BECAUSE of my family, that I AM able to have done what I have done within my 26 years of breathing.  It is because of my family that I will find the strength to continue to walk with HIM each and every day, no matter the ‘road less traveled’ in which my life may take me on.

Convicted

Ever have that feeling, when God has been "nagging" (for lack of better word), you to do something that you really dont want to do?!?!?

Yeps, I have

Ever know that your suppose to have a conversation with someone, a conversation that you really dont want to have and have literally been putting it off for months? But now God has said "enough".

I have

Does your stomach ever get all knoted and twisted? And you would rather go to a foreign country and witness there, than at home with your own family? (Seriously- give me a group of kids in Zambia, or adults living in poverty in the Philippines and be asked to speak-than talking to family)

 Mine Has.

Funny how that works eh? How we can do 'huge stuff' like flying across teh world and preaching, yet when it comes to family and friends....I personally-have WAAAAAAAAAAAAY more fear.

But, as the title says; I am feeling convicted to do something about it.  time to take a "leap of faith' and get out of the boat onto the rocky waters-with my eyes on Christ.

A few things have convicted me to do it.

1) Most important-GOD
2) scripture/prayer
3) my youth (how can I be a leader, challenge my youth in their faith through youth nights/bible study, when my own fears are holding me back...hello hypocrite!)
4) My mom
5) Myself

So here's hoping it goes well.  I am praying for a good, raw and honest conversation with a member of my family shortly (no its nothing life serious or anything like that, but its somehting I know God is telling me to do)

So with that, have a great Saturday!
