Jesus, Heal our Nations

My head is spinning, my heart is hurting.

My head struggles with reason, with a countless number of questions regarding the pointless loss of life that seemed to rock America, a Nation less than 15 miles from my very home, this past week.  As an American friend and I struggle through the questions, one text aroused within our conversation that captured my attention the most.  It is a question that has been on repeat on my mind, it is “Really though, how do we fix this?” Even from thousands of miles away, I can hear the pain in her heart for her country and for all the lives lost.  From there, the conversation continued as we debated/questioned/wrestled together, with the thought of how one country (America) is so very different than its neighbour to the North (Canada).  Especially when we, Canada, are literally like a ‘hop, skip and a jump’ away.  Do I have an answer?  My brain wants to give one.  My instinct is to mention the difference in policy, governments and even the mentality of the people themselves, but my heart is quiet.  It is truly weeping for the lives lost regardless of age, nationality, gender, and skin colour.

I saw a series of post on Instagram recently by a white humanitarian photographer whom I follow.  The posts were simple.  Each post had a black background with one simple word in white making up one of the most popular, current hashtags. BLACK LIVES MATTER.  His message was clear, but as I read the caption below it, tears began to flow from my eyes.  I could relate, somewhat, on a personal level.  He talked about disliking his white skin colour, to the point where he was even ashamed of it and how he wanted to ‘rip it off’.

I get it.  I do.  I get it in a very personal way.

I cannot even begin to explain to you the number of times I have been approached throughout my travels, by someone of a different skin colour, who simply wanted to ‘touch my skin and absorb the ‘purity’ within it’.  What about the number of times street kids have singled me (or the group of friends I was with) out?  Begging for money or anything else we had to offer, simply because of the skin colour we bore.  I’ve been to African markets with national friends of mine and without national friends of mine and I am tired of being taken advantage of simple because of my skin.  More so, I am tired of how local vendors were completely rude and obscene to my friends but yet ‘as respectful and helpful’ towards me simply cause they wanted to make a sale (needless to say, that vendor did not get any business from us).

What about that time in a Thailand pharmacy when I almost bought a SKIN WHITENING shampoo/lotion?  Seriously, what would have to be IN something like that to physically lightening the skin? The sight of rows upon rows of products like those; further broke my heart. Or that time in India when a gang of men on motorbikes, showed up screaming at the store owner of the small tailor shop we were picking our Punjab’s up at.  The men on bikes were threatening the store owner simply because he was doing business with people of white skin colour (us).  On our way back home, we were caught in a riot of protestors and forced to walk over fire (literally) that was burning across the street.

Africa is the hardest for me though.  I’ve heard story upon story from those of coloured who have lived through racial tensions.  I recall a conversation I had with Oma, my host grandma during my time in Capetown.  If anyone understood racial tension, it was this sweet, 80+ year old lady.  She had personally lived through the Mandala era and experienced much more in a single life time than anyone should.  Yet here she was, sharing her heart with me, saying how she wouldn’t ever change her skin colour for anything.  How she is proud to be a lady of colour and everything that comes/came with it.  Her dream is that her two young grandchildren could grow up in a world where fear ceased to exist when it came to skin colour and racial tension.

The single hardest conversation in regards to skin colour, which I have ever had was with one of my grade 10 female students in Zambia in 2015.  A year later, and it still brings tears to my eyes as I think about how her body physically trembled as the pain beside me and how the pain in her voice came through as she shared her one wish with me.  She wishes that she would have been born white instead of black, born North American instead of Zambian.  I could hear how the distaste she had for herself simply because of her skin colour.  This young, beautiful 16 year old, ashamed of who she was simply because of her skin, unaware of the power that her life really held.  As I sat next to her, I prayed for words to encourage her with.  None came.  Instead, we simply cried together.  Black and white.  White and black.

I didn’t write this post to ‘stir anything up’.  Rather, as a way for myself to process current events, along with past situations both global and personally.

In parting, I would like to leave it with two simple quotes that have been challenging me lately.  My prayer is that they will challenge you as well and together, we can be unified voices in a world that is crying out for something more, BEFORE another life is lost.

“We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented” – Elie Wiesel; survivor of a WW2 Nazi concentration camp and author of the autobiography “NIGHT”

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor” by Desmond Tutu, a black South African social rights activist.

Everything Glorious (The World at my 'door')

"You make everything glorious
You make everything glorious
Yeah, You make everything glorious
And I am Yours
What does that make me?"
('Everything Glorious' David Crowder Band)

Instagram, Facebook (and I imagine, Twitter, if I had it) are filled with latest posts, blog updates, photos and status’s of friends going on, and currently on, missions trips.  I see photos of friends, still on their World Race adventure, rafting down flooded streets in Manila, to former squad mates/teammates leading Passport and World Race trips in Latin America exploring jungles and climbing mountains.  To other former teammates who are back in the land of South East Asia (Cambodia of all places!!! Oh my heart desires!!) and I am seeing the smiling faces of Khmer children once again.

I cannot help but think… ‘that DANG news-feed…I wish I could stop getting updates!’

At this, I have to stop and pull myself back.  The thought of, ‘I wonder if this is a little of what friends and family here at home, went through last year while I was one the race?’ (*light bulb!)  It is not that I am jealous of them (okay maaaaaaaaaybe a little bit lot) but rather, I wish that it was me ‘out there’ enjoying those places, meeting people and simply living the life God has called me to live.  Wild and free…each day being the next great adventure.  Yet where do I find myself?

Sitting in a classroom, or in the library finishing up one paper and immediately starting on the next… But truly I tell you, I AM happy where I am in this season of life.  I really TRULY 100% am.
Why do I need to ‘go out’ to see the world, when the ‘world’ is LITERALLY at my ‘front door’ and in my university classes?

Yep.  That’s right. Korea, Germany, Paraguay, Indonesia, Venezuela and China are just a few of the places where the people are from who I have met recently.

Today alone, I was working on a Lab for one of my classes and, as I looked around at the 3 other faces before me, I realized that we had 4 different NATIONS represented there in a space no larger than an office space.  How awesome is that? One of my TESOL Profs said something pretty profound on one of the first day of classes that I believe will stick with me for my entire life.  It is something that I have always known in the back of my head and has been a part of my philosophy while traveling.  It is also one of the reason why I push those around me TO travel as I know from first hand experiences (and friendships) the value in it.  She asked us to look at our classmates-many of whom are NOT Canadian and come from some of the places I mentioned above earlier.  She said that, ‘yes we are classmates now, but the relationships and the friendships we, as students, are forming-have the potential to change the world.  Like to SERIOUSLY change it! To change it on a political level.  Who knows…the feisty Korean next to me, might very well be one of their next presidents.  Or the German sitting across, might someday have a role in leading their government to change.  My new Venezuelan roommate back at home, might someday return to her home country with the desire (and passion) to eliminate poverty in her neighbourhood.  The ‘kids’ I spent time with in Zambia, may very well someday BE the next Zambian President or, be the one to discover the cure for AIDS (YES LORD YES!!!)

Perhaps your thinking, ‘really Nikki? Not possible, ain’t never gonna happen.  There is no way one person can change the world like that’.

Yes they can.  They have.

(Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King Jr, Rosetta stone, Abraham Lincoln , Albert Einstein, Joan of Arc, Jane Austen, and Anne Frank just to name a few...oh and what about a guy named JESUS?!?!)

But how does that apply to ME? Here and now, especially when I see crazy photos of friends boating down the amazon, or experiencing yet another typhoon in the Philippines?

It doesn’t.

BUT it reminds me of the GOOD work that GOD IS doing right here right now within my life.  Yes, my ‘adventure’ now looks different…but why do I need to go ‘see the world’ when the world is right here? Change starts now.  Change starts when I take an extra few minutes to help an international student with learning English.  Change begins when I help my new Venezuelan friend (and roommate) move in and experience life living on her own for the first time in Canada.

And, when my newsfeed/Instagram BLOWS up with photos and status’… it ultimately reminds me to PRAY for my friends who ARE overseas and for the CHANGE that GOD is bringing through them.  Race on friends!!
RACE ON no matter where you are!!

"My eyes are small but they have seen
The beauty of enormous things
Which leads me to believe
There's light enough to see
Oh, that

From glory to glory
You are glorious
You are glorious
From glory to glory
You are glorious
You are glorious
Which leads me to believe
Why I can believe

From glory to glory
You are glorious"

A good Slap in the face

"Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."
  Luke 12:6-7

I just got a good 'slap in the face' from God.
I am in the back yard at my parents now and its a beautiful evening out (and such a great day!) and mom sees this wren (a type of bird) flying in and out of her snow man bird house.  So we spend some time just watching this wren fly in and out-each time with a small piece of stick or something.  It is clear that the bird is building a nest.  So as we are watching this, I am remembering the bible study I had with my girls last sunday-where the focus was these two verses found in Luke and in Matthew.  God loves me (and YOU) so very much.  Simply watching this wren-how it went back and forth bit by bit-no worries and so care free...I could almost feel God "upstairs" in Heaven looking down at me and saying "remember Nikki, I love you MORE then I love that wren.  I know the NUMBER OF HAIRS ON YOUR HEAD-yet you dont trust me with your life?  My daughter, you are worth FAR more that that bird-yet look at how I care for it--Dont you think that I dont care for you more?  Crazy child!  Where is your 'child like faith?'  I love you. I LOVE YOU"

Do you know what it feels like to be loved by the Creator? Pretty darn awesome amazing!!!  You should try it-seek God, feel His love and warm embrace.  Allow Him to speak to you and through you and through His creation.  He craves a relationship with you.  He is waiting for you.

29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[a] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.Matthew 10:28-30

June 1 Ramblings

To Go...or not to go?  THAT is the question.  It is time to do a "self' Check.  Why do I /am I going on this experience? WHO am I doing it for? What reasons?  Am I over analyzing this all?

Whoa ok Nikki, back up.  I have applied/been accepted to "the World Race" .  What it basically is, is serving God in 11 different countries, for 11 months-that is the short of it.  I have prayed about it,  I have talked to people about it and part of me is like "yep ok I am so ready to go!" then reality kicks it (or rather, fear) and I do not know what to do.

Honestly- I am quite surprised at myself that I have not gotten "antsy" sooner-and the fact that I am debating/wrestling this hard now to with deciding yes or no-has me quite curious.  I did not think I would be around Altona this long, AND to make things even more odd-I also didnt think I would be ENJOYING it here either.  I know God says "Go" but what if He also says "Stay?".

I love working with youth- I love youth ministry.  I never thought I would think that.  I knew youth are awesome and fun to hang around and what not-but I didnt think that God would "break my heart" right here at home like He has.  This has me quite torn because I know the need for missions overseas, but I have also been opened to the need right here at home- Discipling the next generation to be strong Christian Leaders.
I still feel as tho God is using me here.  Just from the different feedback I have heard from second hand, as well as first hand-has me encouraged and gives me the drive to want to keep going.  I know it takes a year or two to get situated in it/build relationships-but after those first two years or so-its awesome.  I am one week away from finishing my second year of being involved in youth ministry and like I said, I can see how relationships with the youth have changed from "having fun and being silly" or deep God talks and really connecting (course it depends on the youth as well) and i feel that my third year, will just bring more of it (hopefully).  Dare I say I feel CONTENT?!!?  Scary thought coming from me.

and Yes my job isnt ideal (nor fun always, nor do I always like going in to work) and I dont want to be there my entire life, but it is a job and it is/can be a ministry all in itself.

Now, I am not shutting the World RACE idea down-but instead-maybe just postponing it.  They send out different teams 3 times a year (Jan. July. Sept) and the one I have been accepted for-leaves in Jan.  This means oonly doing a little less then half a youth year (less still cause I am gone to Africa in Nov. with my church again) and I am not sure how I feel about that.

SO SOLUTION:  start/finish another youth year and then leave next july! best of both worlds! :)

Success!?!?

I think I am going to set a record this month with Blog posts!
So my skype interview came and went yesterday-took a whole 33 minutes and 45 seconds form when I said "hello?!? can you hear me?" to "thanks for talking-have a good one! Cya!".  How did it go?  Well lets just say that that was the most honest I have every been with a complete stranger! (not sure if thats a good thing or not-but in this case-lets go with "yes").  Now, its a waiting game.  They take a week on their end to do a background/reference check on me (to make sure I am not a creep I guess!) and so I wait! Beyond that, I am not sure what happens-but I know its not in my hands tho-its totally and completely in God's Almighty Hands.  How am I feeling about it? Well-as my last post suggests-I was quite nervous 45 minutes leading up to it-but once it was done-it was like "thats it?" the peace is back-because like I said, I know its not in my hands-its in God's-always.

So yah, thats where I am at now with it-just thought I'd update ya'll (or who ever reads this still)

and here are some pics for your viewing pleasure!
Some photos from a recent photoshoot outdoors! Loving the spring weather for it!!!

Plus, I had awesome company join me on this photoshoot as well! Thanks Michelle!
