When Death Come Knocking (Eternal Glory)

There comes a point in one’s life, where we all have no choice but to face death.  It is simply a ‘normal’ part of life.  We are born as babies who grow into toddlers, kids, pre-teens, teens, young adults and, eventually (hopefully) we mature into adults.  For the majority of us, our lives will end sometime during our ‘senior’ years.

But what happens when “death comes knocking” way too early in life?  Miscarriages, still born, cancer, ‘freak’ accidents, and incurable diseases (HIV/AIDS) to name a few, and those we love are ‘taken’ from us before we are ready to let them go?

We (I) are (am) quick to question God.  Quick to ask, ‘where is He?’ ‘Doesn’t He love us?’ and ‘how could He allow this to happen’.  Or, one that I have been asking (saying to) myself a lot lately is, “I though God was/is a God of miracles…this would have been a ‘prime time’ to have shown that.  Way to ‘miss’ this chance God”.

Although there is a freedom in knowing it is ‘okay’ to ask…it doesn’t take the hurt/pain away from losing a loved one…whether they were with us for a few minutes or many many years.  There is never enough time.  Eventually, we all will ‘run out of time’.

Morbid?? Perhaps.

Reality….absolutely.

Recently, I have been forced to deal with two people who have died, in my opinion, way too early in life.  Although these two people are from two very different sides of my heart…one a blood relative and one not, they are both a part of my family and saying ‘Good-bye’ is never easy.  Although the words, “At least they are in a better place, alive and well” are meant to be a form of an encouragement, they are not.  It hurts and it flat out sucks.  I have also yet to come up with an answer to the question, “How are things going?”  My default answer, “considering the shitty situation at hand, not ‘bad’”.

I am well aware that death is a topic that makes many people (including myself) uncomfortable simply because we do not know how to respond or act to death itself.  Reality also is, that life goes on.  The living are still living and the mundane of everyday life, continues.  Where do we find the balance of mourning the loss of a loved one, yet rejoicing in the life that they DID live…regardless of the number of years they were given here on earth.

Isn’t it interesting how scripture speaks to our hearts in that exact moment in which we need it?  Even though it may be from a passage in which we have read thousands times before?  Psalm 139 is a Psalm that I love and have read countless number of times. Yet recently, when I was reading it to my small group of girls at youth, verse 16-18 struck me in a way that it never has prior.

It reads…

“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!  Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you”.

Life is a gift.  It is meant to be treasured and fought for.  What we do with the time we are given here on earth, is so important.  It’s not about having the newest, hottest ‘toy’ or having the biggest house.  It is about the relationships we have with those around us.  More importantly, it is about our relationship with God and trusting Him, to work through our lives and IN everything that we do no matter the situation we may be facing.

At the end of my life, whatever day that was ordained for me in His book, all I crave, is to see the face of my Maker before me and to hear Him say,

“Welcome to Eternal Glory.  Well done, good and faithful servant.  Welcome Home”.

400 and counting

I started this blog back in 2006? Roughly something like that I do believe!
And here it is folks! post #400!!!

Although I have been wanting to/needing to blog over this last week...I just have not.  BUT God IS ALIVE and HE IS MOVING.  This last week, was Crazy with different meetings, coffee/supper dates and appointments, youth, etc etc.  Each evening was filled with something.  All good things, but it was still busy. Yet amidst that craziness, God showed up.  He provided for me in some crazy ways for my WR trip.  From financial donations, to having my malaria pills covered, to just a calming sense of peace that ONLY comes from HIM.  He spoke to me through a friend.  He challenged and encouraged me through her.  I discovered aspects of myself that I was not yet fully aware of.  I am continuing to witness HIM freeing a good friend of mine from a bondage she thought she wouldnt ever escape from.  God has not only given HER joy, but I too, could not stop singing HIS praises.  Guys, GOD IS SO ALIVE AND IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!! Seriously, if I didnt live in the middle of FLAT prairies, I would scream that from the mountain tops!

That being said, American got hit hard this past week.  Boston Bombings and a fertilizer plant that exploded in West Texas..both places in which I have friends in.  There is a lot of pain, a lot of questions, hurt and anger...yet in it-people are turning to God.  He makes ALL things NEW and works for the GOOD in all those who Believe.

So, I could go on but simply put- despite the junk in our own lives and in the world...GOD IS AWESOME. GOD IS ALIVE. AND GOD IS MOVING in AMAZING WAYS!

Selfish...pt. 2

I want to share a bit of a story, something that I wrestled with this last week.  I was reminded at the importance of attitude and yes, it has to do with being selfish as well.  As much as I try (some days, more than other) to have a good attitude about work-I really dont.  For the month of august, I worked around 50 hours a week with overtime-which was fine as I knew (and was expecting too) work that.  However, come September now, I was anticipating back to normal 9-5:30 hours but NO overtime sign went back up and the request for working Saturday came up.

Now, in my head I was thinking "no way, I am done working OT" BUT then my last post came to mind, but more importantly-this little 'voice' (aka God) popped into my head and told me "hello Nikki-um remember about living your life FOR ME in EVERYTHING YOU DO...I am the One you are serving, not your boss, not your work-NOTHING BUT ME" whoa ok God-i got the message loud and clear..at least I think I did.

Needless to say, I did go into work this morning and I am not saying/sharing this to brag or anything- but it proves my point from last post.  How many times in a day, do I think about "me me me".  I could have said no to going into work-and that would have been ok, do not get me wrong...but it would not have sit well with me. (again, look at how many times I said "me" in that...)

Anyways point being- to truly live for Christ, we need an attitude adjustment.  We need to re focus our line of thinking and constantly think of God.  One thing that I do love about work, that I have said before, is the fact that my job is so routine that I can pray all day (not that I do do that everyday, but I can/should).  Actually there have been many good chats I have had with God while at work which is awesome.

Thanks God, for showing yourself to me in the routine of life.  Father I know I am not perfect.  I stumble. I fall. But You pick me up.  You carry me through it all.  You always have and always will.  I do not know what the future holds, but I do know that I am excited for it.  I am excited for youth start up coming shortly and the chance to connect there and, hopefully, change lives for You.  I cannot (and will not) do that alone.  I need you to continue to walk with me.

"He has shown you, O man, what is good.  what does the Lord is required of you?  To DO Justice. LOVE mercy and WALK humbly with the LORD your God" Micah 6:8

Selfish..part 1

I AM SELFISH.  I have been realizing this lately about myself and it scares me.
I like my comfort.
I like my pay check twice a month
I like my hot showers.
I like my north american plumbing.
I like the fact that I DONT have to sleep under a mosquito net
actually, better put- I Like my nice warm bed.
I like my apartment
I like my heat in winter and my AC in summer.
I like my drivers.
I like my freedom.
I like my fridge
I like my food in my fridge.
I like my ability to be physically mobile
I like my job security
I like my health insurance/coverage
I like my free health care
I like my education that I had
I like my stove/microwave
I like my family (most days :P)
I like my friends
I like my internet
I like my clean drinking water
I like my ability to travel when (where) I want

I like my...I like my.. I like my... I like my....
This is just the start of the things I 'like" off the top of my head...as this list is NOT exhausted.

While the above statements are true, I hope you realized I put the "I like" parts like that, purposely to make a point (which I hope I did?!)  I realized tonight-through a new college / career evening that local people are starting, at how selfish I really am.  It is so true that this is a "me me me me me" world that we live in.

Now I just want to say, there is NOTHING wrong with the things that I have listed above.  Friends, family, food, health care,  etc are all great but we need to change teh way we look at them.  They are gifts from God and are not to be taken forgranted of.

But it doesnt stop there.  As Christians, as Christians from ANY generation-we are called to give it up.  To give up the few things that I mentioned-for Christ.  We are called to go and make disciples.  There is no greater calling then that.  Period.

I would like to continue this topic on the blog for a bit-as I feel its a large topic and I need to do some thiking.praying on it...but for now-what are your thoughts on 'selfish'?

"A thought to grow on"

Shine for Christ.

He is RISEN!

Alright, so technically has not happened yet (at least this here-what we call Easter...) but all day at work...at any given time I  could have just shouted for JOY.  I LOVE basking in God's Love and glory! It is incredible and seriously, if you have not tried it..TRY IT you have NO idea what you are missing on! Seriously even as I write this...I have "filled with your Glory" on by Starfield and just how fitting are those lyrics.  It brings tears to my eyes.

Like I said earlier, Easter is right around the corner (with Good Friday being tomorrow) and for some reason-Easter is hitting me different this year.  A good different.  I think I am somewhat finally slowly starting to understand God's love for me.  I mean, I know He loves me. I always have.  Yet now, it seems real, it seems personal.  Almost as tho I can feel Him next to me daily, always right beside me.  THrough the good and the bad.

I have always heard it said to "read read read your Bibles"  Its a way to get to know God, to draw close to Him and have Him draw to you.  After all, I mean scripture is God breathed.  I believe that.  I started  alternating between Old and New testament at the start of the Year and wow wow wow. It is amazing. GOD is amazing.

Prayer. Pray Pray Pray.  I feel as though that always has been a strong point in my personal walk with God.  People sometimes do not understand praying to "someone who isnt there" but honestly that is one thing I dont think I ever have struggled with. It has been one of those things that I have 'just accepted' and believed.  It (prayer) is what has pulled me through my life, and especially-my various travels.  I remember calling home one time while I was in the ukraine and just telling mom, sharing stories and my excitement for where  I was and what I was doing.  I remember her mentioning to me that she was praying and that right there, hit me.  It was (is) because of the prayers of those around me-that I have been able to do what I have done.

Enter last night youth...WOW!  2 hours of pure praise and worship, of testimonies and sharing stories (both humerous and light), while the youth took turns walking through "journey to the cross".  This is sometihng my church puts on every few years and, as leaders, we walked through it the night before.  Now I am honestly always a little 'leary' of things like that cause honestly-God never has "BAM" hit me (so to speak) while I have gone through things like that (both at church and at college) and honestly-He didnt when I walked through it this time either.  BUT I realized while flicking through the slides for songs last night at youth-how God did "BAM' hit me through it.  (bad grammar I know but I hope that that made sense!) While singing, while sharing and listening to those share-I was overwhelmed with His great love.  I cannot explain it. I just can't but wow was it powerful.

HE died for ME.  ME. He took my sins to the cross.  Bore my weight and pain on HIS shoulders.  HE didnt have to.  He could have commanded angels to attend to Him and free Him.  With a snap of His fingers, He could have been off that cross.  He could have skipped it all and stayed in Heaven.  But HE DIDNT.  HE CHOSE TO COME DOWN, to live as a human and die as a human all for me.  All for you.  All for each one of us.

I am so unworthy of it.  But becuase of what HE did on the Cross-I AM worthy of His love.  I am HIS child. HIS Daughter.  I AM THE DAUGHTER OF THE LORD MOST HIGH and NO one can/will ever take that from me.

happy easter! God Bless
GO Bless!

In this moment...I belong

its late
and I need to go to bed however...
GOD IS SO GOOD!
despite my crappy last few days...HE blew my mind again tonight..and i was yet again reminded of HIS Grace and Power and JOY.  Seriously people, again...GET TO KNOW THE YOUTH IN YOUR CHURCH!!!!!! Youth was tonight and all day..I was counting down timejust to get to youth (as I knew it would lift me up) but once again, God did more then I expected.  Not only did HE lift me up through the youth;s worship, He encouraged and challenged me through the message we had, and HE showed His super fun side, playing a game with the youth afterwards.

I was/am reminded that yes, work will and does suck sometimes..but its worth it..for those 8 hours of work, its worth the time that it allows me to be around to go for coffee with some youth girls, to spend time at you and stay late playing a game with them.  THEY are so worth it.  One can not put a time or price on them.

Am I looking forward to going to work tomorrow? honestly, not really, but once I get through the tday, that means I have another evening to give back, to connect with the youth, to laugh, share and hopefully, bless and encourage them, the way they have me!!

Thank you God for youth.  Continue to shape and mold the young people around. You are doing amazing things through them!! :D

God Moment

so just to clarify, I am NOT having a "faith crisis" here-cause it may sound like I am, but I am not (3 in a life time is enough for me thanks!)  I know God loves me, i really do-these are just some thoughts in my head thats all.  Speaking about God's love for me/us-I want to share with you a "God" moment that just happend like 15 minutes a go.  I was skyping with my brother, with facebook still up and a friend from bible college my first year pops up and sends me a short "You know that God loves you eh?" message on chat.  Keep in mind this is a friend who I actually have not talked to for quite some time, so she has no idea these thoughts on love/God's love are going through my head.  So she was already signed off so i texted her and said thanks and what prompted her to mention that?  She said it was, "God Prompting :D"  CRAZY eh?  If that right there is not a display of love, I dont know what is!!
All praises to HIM!
God you are so good! Thank you for loving me so! Though I may not fully understand this love, all i can do is lift my hands up and give you praise! Thank you God! I love you!

Amazing Grace how sweet the sound

One thing I like about getting up early in the morning and biking to work for 7 AM is the actually bike ride itself. Those first few minutes of the day. Outside, alone, just God and I. I Cherish it. Every Morning on my way to work, I listen to my Ipod. Today was no different. However what was different was that it had just finished raining early that morning, so it was cool out, slight wind, wet roads, and the occasional stray drop that landed on my head. How does all this tie in? Well the song Grace like Rain, by todd agnew, came to play on my ipod. What an amazing reminder, the start of a fresh new day, the ground wet from the rain, the sun coming up, poking between the clouds, its light reflecting on the wet earth. I would have loved to have just kept on biking and enjoying it instead of going to work. Just the reminder that no matter the sin, it has been washed away, been made clean just like the earth after a rain fall. I love the sound of when its raining outside, perhaps that is why it works so well in the song, amazing Grace How sweet the sound? That saved a wretch like me. Grace like rain falls down on me, Hallelujah all my sins are washed aways, their washed away. I Love those little when God Speaks, either through a song or a rainfall, or both. Those little moments that God uses to remind you that he is there, waiting for you, watching out for you, loving you. How can you not lift your hands in praise and Glory to him? Glory to God
