25 years young

I am into my last 18 hours (ish) of being 24...tomorrow is another day and another birthday for me...the BIG 25 Quarter of century (as my younger, 18 year old brother likes to remind me!).

Wow, 25 years young (cause I refuse to say the word 'old'!) and what a crazy 25 years it has been!  I had a fantastic day in the city yesterday with my mom and what a blessing it was!   Pedicures (yes in -25 degress C weather!), Mongo's for lunch, MEC for WR shopping (got lots done and spent a lot of money!! Is it July yet?!), starbucks and a movie to finish off the day! What a blessing and a joy!! here are just a few pictures from our pedicures off my itouch!

mom and I-love her!

In the movie theater

yes I wore sandals...it was AWESOME!

For real though, one of the best things about 'mother/daughter days', is the car ride in.  Just being able to simply talk for that hour/hour and a half in and then again back home, is something I hope I will never take for granted!  It is something I know already I will miss TONS when I am racing next year on the WR.

With my birthday around the corner, and with the race right around the next corner-It doesn't happen that often, but there are days/times when I DO compare myself to those around me..especially friends that I grew up.  Friends who have been married for a few years already, with a kid or two or one on the way.  Friends who are planning their weddings or recently got engaged, or buying a house or 'moving on' with life.  I cannot help but think to myself...'why is that not me?' Am I that far behind on life?' What the HECK am I doing with my life?  Questions like that, that I KNOW God has figured out and knows HIS plan for my life...so  God likes to remind me of the things that I HAVE done in my short life of 25 years...and wow what a list/adventure/ride its been!

As I was talking with my mom last night, I realized that yah maybe I dont have a PHD or masters, or a husband, or kids or things like that...things that people really 'push for' in this area...things that are the 'norm' but thats okay with me (And just for the record, this is NOT a post bashing ANY of those things...I realize that God calls us each to our own walk/path in HIS time..so please understand me on that!)

Yes I do have a 3 year BA 'under my belt' through SBC but what is way more, in the last 7 years of being out of high school...I have had the honour of traveling international not once...but 5 times to 4 different, but equally amazing for their own way, places.  Each trip overseas-whether it was for school in Sweden, or my second time back to Seeds of Hope in Zambia, has helped shaped who I AM today.  You do not need a degree to go and love...you just have to be willing to be God's hands and feet and to be broken for Him.  You need to be willing to step out of your comfort zone and take a risk on that person, or child that the world deems as 'untouchable' and 'unloveable' because that is where Christ is.  The people that I have met in my travels--will always hold a very special place in my life.  I know God has placed each one of them in my life, when I needed them the most-even though I may not have known it at the time.  I can honestly say I have brothers and sisters in Christ around the world, lifting me up and prayin for me...now THAT is a humbling experience!

To bring it down to more of a 'local level' my three years at SBC challenge/blessed and encouraged me in a way that I never could have dreamed.  That too, GREATLY shaped who I am today through solid biblical teaching done by amazing professors who love Jesus, to older women in dorm who were willing to take a 'chance' on me by investing their time and energy into me, to classmates, roomates and friends--the list goes on

Basically-here is to 24 amazing, hard, challenging, joyful, stressful, broken, healed, years of living!! Thanks Jesus for each and every one of them.  Thank you for the greatest gift of all...to be called YOUR Child!!!

Love you Jesus!

Spirit of Fear

I happened to "randomly' Check this blog today and it surprised me to see that my last post here, was/is similar to a post I posted last night on my world race blog...So I thought I would do a "copy and Paste' sort of thing on to this blog!  Here is the last one EVER of 2012!!

~For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of
power, love, and self-discipline~
                                                                                                                                  2 Timothy 1:7

I was challenged the other day by a friend. Her name; is Leah.

Leah is 25 years old and is originally from Kingston Ontario, Canada.  Now, she is married to a wonderful, Godly man named Alexander and, together, they have a 6 month old beautiful daughter named Anya.  As a family, they currently live just on the outskirts of Belize city, Belize where they are both really involved with Children's Camps International Belize Ministry (such an amazing ministry..check out the work that they are doing in Belize, and INDIA here)

I had the privilege and honour of spending the full day with her this past week (something that only happens when they are out here once a year,  visiting friends/family and ministry related things) and like normal, I was blessed and encouraged by her.

Just for some history on our friendship...I met Leah during my first year of Bible college at Steinbach Bible College  I was a shy (yes R Squad, I was QUITE shy at one point..still am to a point), first year and she was a loud (in a good way) third year.  I was unsure of who I was and insecure, she was very sure of who she was and very confident in herself.  God works in strange, awesome ways and He knew I needed a female mentor like Leah, in my life and so, although I forget how, we connected.  It was the little things really that she did that helped me open up.  A hug, walks,  a smile, or a sincere "how are you?".  It was the bigger things like inviting me over to her place on campus for a 'home made' meal (hey, living in dorm...homemade meals are priceless!), a coffee 'date' to Tim Hortons for an ice Cap and a sprinkled doughnut that made me feel like "hey, I am worth spending time with..."  Things like just talking to me, listening to my struggles and even being silent when that spoke louder than words ever could have.  Offering advice as to my "what now?" questions that I drilled her with that had everything to do with from guys, to school, to life in general, to GOD and what following HIM really meant...I quickly learned that she was someone I could turn to, talk to and trust with whatever was going on in my life.
                   From nikkifriesen.theworldrace.org
(Leah and I in spring 2008)

Fast forward 5 years to where we are now (where has time gone?) and God still is using Leah in my life to guide, mentor and challenge me.  Yes, we have BOTH grown a lot-in similar way and in ways that are VERY different.  Yes, we are on very different stages of life right now.  Yes we even live in completely different countries...

BUT...  We still both love, follow and serve the

EXACT.SAME.GOD.

When we hung out, we did not "waste time" with 'small talk" or "making conversation for the sake of conversation".  Instead...we got right into the stuff I love...the "meat and potatoes" part of life (aka, the deep stuff).  Since we both have a passion for missions...we talked a lot about missions and our own 'philosophy's' on missions.  Through this conversation, I really realized just how much I HAVE grown through the different trips I have done, through the schooling I have taken...yet I also realized just how little I really do know.  I am ok with this, as I know that learning, is a major part of life.

As I was talking to her about my World Race coming up, and sharing about R Squad (dont worry guys, just all good things about you! From nikkifriesen.theworldrace.org), she paused at the end and looked at me and asked,

"So what is stopping you from going into missions FULL time?"
                                                     ---------------------------------------------------------------------

My answer was quick and simple.....
                                                                                                    ...FEAR
(For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline)

I could give the excuse... "I hate asking people for money to support me" (which I do...) or "I do not think I could fully, 100% give up my comfortable, Canadian lifestyle" or, "I will/would miss my family too much" or any other excuse my mind could/would come up with....and while a lot of these reasons are GOOD reasons...they are not the REAL reason that is holding me back...so
                                                                                                      .....lets' be honest here.....

It is pure fear, and fear alone

(For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline)
I've been told that launch for July 2013 is a close 150 (ish) days away....I hear this/see this and I would love NOTHING better than to lock myself in a room and just 'pretend that it is not there'.  I start freaking out because I have SO MUCH to do yet before then and really, 150 days is NOT a whole lot.  I have money to fundraise, things to get, pack, hang out with friends, tell family, training camp, spend time with my youth, work, enjoy one more birthday, finish 'soaking in' Christmas memories and well, just plain RELAX and ENJOY life right here, right now....................

once again..that still small voice I can faintly hear inside my head and in my heart...
"For I (God) has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline"

*Breathe* Ok God, I said I trust when I started to follow you... I have said I trust YOU lots since then...You have never failed me before and You are not going to start.  I know You LOVE me to much to ever let me go...I am holding You to that right here, right now, every day leading up to the race, EVERy day ON the race and every day after the race for the rest of my life.

~For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of
power, love, and self-discipline~
"Father God, thank you for Leah, for the incredible mentor she has been and continues to be, for me in my life.  I pray that as her family heads back to Belize, that You will continue to bless and enrich their lives personally and through the ministry.  When she is done, or having a rough day, wrap her tighter in Your arms...hold her closer with Your mighty arms.

Father, as the race comes closer day by day..calm my heart.  Give me Your peace, Your power, Your love and self discipline to see YOU in ALL that goes on.  I pray that ultimately, I will know you more and more every day.  I pray for  YOUR strength when I feel weak.  Your JOY when I am sad.  Your LOVE when I feel as though I have no more love to give. I praise you because I AM FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE.  YOUR WORKS ARE WONDERFUL, I KNOW THAT FULL WELL .
I love you Jesus.
Amen"

Whirlwind ride

Wow what a ride it has been these last two weeks. THere should be warning labels or something when one accepts CHrist..actaully no cause that would scare people off-or make them think again. Does that make sense?
I was recently asked by a friend that, if its ok to feel scared? Scared about what? About anything, about what the future holds, about the past, present, certain situations.
These last two weeks at school have been quite a ride. Homework wise it has not been bad, at least not yet (and am surprised not that far behind considering it has felt like I have done nothing) but mentally its been quite exhausting. One thing that I am learning lots and lots is the importance of friends and honesty and lifting each other through the tough times. I am realzing that when it comes to friends, if they are in pain or struggling or something, I have to be able to do something, I CAN NOT sit back and not do anything-its just not me and I am getting a crash course on it.

Today I spent over an hour out on the farm just talking, and a little shouting, to God. So many questions and thoughts and all-it was good, I think for Both of us. We dont always see eye to eye (which is good) so to be able to be outside in the cool, away from people, gave me a time to think, reflect, pray and cry. Try it I recommend it-it helps

We are all getting a crash course on learning what it means to be a unifed body of Believers. God calls us to bear one another burdens yes some days it might be tough, and hard, But God is ulitmatley in control, we need to Lift up our Burdens together to Him and Let Him Carry us through the Pain.
On that note, Pray for me as I walk along side people and their hurt. PRay for the students as we cope with diffeerent stresses that come before us. Pray for the profs and facutly who are there to help us through. Pray for the community at SBC, that we learn to grow and trust each other
GOd is good, even through the bad

2 weeks done!

HEre I am on my first weekend at home since school. Where do I start? SChool has been great, been a lot of fun re connecting with friends and all of that. Classes are awesome. Learning lots and being challenged already. I am in Interpersonal Processes (looking at personality types), Christian Ethics (should be really mentally challenging but awesome) Theology, Cultural Anthropology, and Mission theology and stragety. There have already been trials, but living in community there, reminds me the importance of it-the support that is there. Yah its awesome, liking it lots and lots already. Tomorrow is an early morning-a friends wedding which I am excited for, it just means an early morning but it will be good. Yah I should be doing homework, but an evening off is good!

Last night I had two awesome phone calls from to amazing friends. One from Leah which was awesome-it was great just to reconnect and talk. It was awesome
The second was from Shelby (friend from EUrope)-
I was reminded again how fortunate I am with the friends I have! They are truely a blessing!

ANother New toy and two more weeks:D

Ok remind me next time I see a camera store, to just avoid it! All I wanted was a new camera bag (which I got-sweet lowpro one) however I also walked out (paid of course) with a new lens! It was just to cheap to pass by....plus a really good discussion with the sales guy...it was sweet:D But yes, this lens is more of a macro/sports lens-a lot more centerd focus-it has no zoom to it (who need tha twith the other lens I got!) Yah time to buckle down and read those manuals and really dig into the camera and learn

So yah, tomorrow marks two more weeks of work:D Yah I am stoked about that, but before that is over, many more hours will be put in! (this whole summer, minus the days I had off, I have only worked 2, 8 hour days! The rest of been 9-10 hour days)
But that allowed me to get that lens so thats good. Work overall has been good-very tring some days just cause of a few people who work there, but all in all, its been good:D

I am so stoked for school though! Just to re connect with friends, meet new people and learn more about God (get some of those questions answerd). Its crazy how fast summer has gone, I remember leaving that last day of school, waiting to go home so bad, but yet not becuase that meant itw as 4 months till I saw them al again, well here its 3 and a half months later and we are working on heading back! Crazy how fast time has gone!
Just a few highlites from the summer
SBC get together in June-just reconnect one more time:D
Camping in july and august (with no injuries so far:D)
Turtle Mountian Bible Camp!!! SUch an awesome time! Great people, Great staff, awesome fun and one amazing GOD!! cant wait to go back!

Another major high was also earlier on in may, during may long, when I headed to Ontario to meet up with friends from Europe. Just an awesome time to reconnect and remind me the importance of friends everywhere. I will always remember that time!
That said, heres to Summer 2008- a summer of its highs and lows, falling but also learning to stand strong, the answers and guidence it provided as well as the questions and concerns it brought up-always learning and growing!

HOwever-heres to a new school year- a new year to connect with old friends, make new friends, follow God, build each other up, learn, grow, tumble, fall and keep striving till the very end!

Who am I

So like the pictures show, this past may long weekend, I was in Ontario at a Holsby Brunn reunion! It was so much fun! It was great seeing everyone again and connecting on more of a personal level (versus facebook or even email) it was great to see where they were all at in life a year later from school. Once again I was blown away at the fact that that we are all from such different backgrounds and yet when we got togehter, it was like we had always hung out throughout the year! Like distance didnt matter at all! It was so cool. We were talking with another couple there (adam's brother and sister in law) who met at Holsby Brunn, and we were just talking about the connections that get made there. Until one expereinces it for themselves, it is really hard to describe. I guess cause we all expereinced the same thing out there and just a different bond was form. Like I say its hard to describe.
That being said though- who am I? When I was with them, it was like a whole different world. I have my friends that I grew up with, SBC friends who I adore and Holsby friends with whom we have formed a tight knit unit. Although I can (for the most part) adjust to all three-while I was there this past weekend'Somebody mentioned "wwow I havent seen this mischevious side of you Nikki!:D" whereas at SBC, if someone has aprank pulled on them , I am often the first one blamed (though i love it hehehehe:D) So its interesting. But like I said, it was great seeing Holsby friends again and felt waaaaaay more comfortable with them and itw as great seeing them on different levels outside of schooL!
So not sure if this made anysense but yah! Have a good one

Breaking down

So yesterday I had typed up a whole write up for here, but apparently it didnt update the blog, so yah here we go again and hopes it works.
Anyways, School is officially, 100% done for this year. My first year at SBC done, wow insane. HOw do I feel? Not sure yet. Right now We have my brothers wedding on saturday so very busy with that so though I have had some time to process everything, still working on it from making that shift to saying bye this past monday, to wedding stuff to starting work this coming monday. all just very busy and it takes me a while to adjust at points.
That said though, I think I am looking forward to starting work on monday. A friend of mine will be working there this summer with me and I am looking forward to getting to know her better and develop our friendship deeper through breaks and just talking and all. That said also, I know come july and August it will be hard and trying with the amount of work there and the hours I know I will have to put in and all...yet someone at school made a good point. They too were just going back for the summer to work and their goal was to hav that become their mission field. I will admit, I am quite bummed about not doing anything international like I had hoped at first, but this started to make me think about how I can be God's light were I work. I think, no I have made it my goal to each day, just brighten one persons day a bit, whether at work, home or out on the streets. I pray that God will use me this summer in those small ways. That said though, I am flying to ontario for may long weekend to hang out with friends tha tI met in sweden. we are having a Holsby reunion which I am SUPER pumped about! Flying there with a friend from sask. and then for 2-3 weeks injuly I am planning on being a counselr at camp. So I guess I am doing sometihng. Something that was stressed over to me lately is that God will use me whereever I am, as long as I am willing. So that is my prayer also.

As a short reflection on this past year, I dont know where to start! One thing that really sticks out is not the classes or the 2AM or 5AM timmy runs, or sev runs, or even something as powerful as Mission X, it is the smiles, hugs, lauighter, community, friends that were there that stick out. THough this summer break is much needed, I miss them dearly already! Again God has blessed me so much this last year with peoples friendships. For those that knew me prior to school/europe will know that I was more laid back and not as social as some, I also had a large personal bubble. NOw I dont know if this is good or bad, but I know my bubble has totally shrank this last year (and I tihnk its good) I am discovering who I am, the fun side is coming out more and things dont embarress me liek the used to...thanks to a few certain people!
SO yah, not sure who all reads this still, but those of you from SBC-I can not say thanks enough for everything this past year! IT has been a riot and I will never forget this year! AND keep in mind, more great times to come next year!
Till next time (which i hope is sooner then this last one!)
take care and God Bless

feeling happy!

Spring is in the air. Although it still is a little cool out today, spring is in the air and that is making me feel happy happy! Well that among other things as well. Ok so school is going really good-class are great, homework load is getting lighter, hockey is basically done (which is good and bad), things are working out and next week is easter break already! WOOT! But yah so an update to the summer and where things are looking at with that. I have decieded (though prayer and talking with friends, family and profs) that I am going to stick around this summer-instead of doing anything internationally. Yeah financial reasons played a large impact into that, but so did advice from friends and profs. THIs does not say that summer missions are totally out of the question (no way and chances are will do one next summer) but right now, its just not for me (well it is, but isnt if that makes sense). So instead, I am going to spend the summer working back at Supreme, but get this, not all summer. May Long weekend-on the 15th-I am flying out to Ontario for a Holsby reunion which I am STOKED beyound measures. I miss those guys so very much and cant wait to spend time with them! Also I am flying with a friend on the way done so yah its good. Then I work for another month and a bit and then plan pn taking 3ish weeks off for camp work this summer. Big step as last time I had anything to do with camp was as a camper in grade 3... when I amworking at camp yet, not sure, however, God is opening up doors as we speak and is paving way-all I am doing is praying and following. I never thought I would get excited about working at a camp-but there are like little bubbles in me wanting to explode cause of the joy! Its wierd, I am just happy happy happy! Its like the feeling a young kid gets opening up Christmas presents, but in a few days I am 20, so not a kid anymore, and Christmas is still 9 months off but get what I mean?

Along with summer and those plans, comes also a little sorrow. SBC has become such a family to be that saying good bye, well lets just say I am not looking forward to it (so how about we make a deal and party hard now till the end?!) Again, I am reminded at how much of a blessing my friends there have been to me. Like really guys, more then you will ever know. I only pray that God will make our paths cross again in later! (whether back at school next year or on the missions field or something!)

yah so its nice out, I am off to walk charlie (who has gotten so big and fun and oh I just love him to pieces!) So may God Bless you even more then He has blessed me!
Till next time

Today

So today was good-did not do much other then church in the morning and a long walk in the afternoon and took a few pictures so it was good. This weekend was really good as well. Spent time with a friend and did a little homework and relaxed and all. Spring is in the air (and hopefully it stays) so that is also good! Makes me happy. I think I just figured out that SPring is my new favorite season-when the cold and dead of winter gives way to fresh new life-it is good! Anyways, not sure yet but after this weekend at home-i might have to stay in at school till March 13 so that would be the longest stretch at school and so that means no time to update this thing-so I thought I would now shortly just do a write up.
Life is still good-still debating what to do this summer and all-but still praying about it and trusting GOd with it as well. School is good, busy between friends, hockey, class and homework and all but it goes well and 2 months from now/today acutally I am 100% done! Exams and all! so that is sort of scary! I realized again this weekend at how special the friends I have made at SBC! They have been my support in so many ways! Thanks so much guys! For that reason alone, school was so worth it! Like holsby, its amazing at how quick friends become family and the bond that is formed.

Charlie is good-having a few issues with the whole COME thing but other then that, he is good and growing-more length then height which is fine, but yah he is fun fun fun! anyways thats just a short update from this weekend and a few pictures from this weekend as welL! enjoy and till next time

Week off!

So we are currently in day two of our week off and so far it has been so nice! Its drama week for the people who are in it, so for them it will be intense, but so far, my week has consisted of scrapbooking, biking (almost hit a tree the other day! Not cool!), relaxing and babysitting. Oh and lets not forget the homework as well! I managed to get through a book and do the weekly chapter things for it, so thats one thing down, and only like 50 to go! Its insane but oh th elife of a college student! I stopped by work the other day just to say hey and all. It was wierd being the one to walk in and not have to work! Same faces and all and same job. It was good. Though I dont miss it now, come summer it will be nice to head back there I think.... long hours but decent money so that is good also. So yah just a quick update as yet again I should be working on homework having just finished babysitting all day. Off to hit the books! ENjoy some random pics from school so far!

Brother Benidict week review

A week update-This last week was really good. We had what was callled a brother benidict week. Sunday we started off the evening with a meeting about the week. I typical day consisted of waking up after 6ish, prayer from 7-8. Breakfast, class/study time, lunch (most fasted through it), class/study time, then either a spiritual discipline, or someting else such as the sandilands, RASK, or yah. THe evening was more study time, the free time 8-10, followed by daily examean, and then nice and early bed at 11! That was so nice. Thursday-Friday night we had an all night vigil and it was good. When we were at the Sandilands, that was so good. I sat down under an evergreen tree and it was total de ja vu from sweden. I was sitting under the tree with a bag lunch, bible and journal. I think i found out why I like evergreen trees, its because they remind me of God. THe out reaching branches remind me of Gods grace, with how he reaches his safety, telling us to come into his arms. THe overbearingness of the height of the tree reminds me that God's Love prevails. That he is greater then our weakness or struggles. THe fact that they are called evergreens, reminds me that God is everlasting, it never fails or dies. That was my little insight for the week. IT was quite awesome.
School is still going good-this next week is crazy with mid terms and exams. Prayer for that would be great. Friends are amazing, and I am thanking God everyday for them! Thanks guys for everything!

Its too hot out

For middle of September, it is too hot out! I like the cold! Get me the cold! Ok so now that that is over with, this last week I finished my first full week of College. It was great! Between classes, homework and hanging out, its lots of fun! and also not much down time. Classes are going good, learning lots and learning things that maybe I already knew, but this way am looking at them differently. Its cool. Dorm life is so fun. Getting to knwo new people, sharing ideas and thoughts. One things SBC stresses which I really like is Community, and That is one of the reasons I am glad I picked SBC versus others, just for the reasons that it is a smaller school, you have a chance for personal relationships to develop and all. Its good. God is good.
But on that note, off to work on homework!

A week or so in

School started this last wednesday, well with moving into dorm last monday. MOnday and then Tuesday was then lots of orientation. Basically I got information over load in the first 48 hours of being there, but thankfully already its better. Dorm life will be great. THere seem to be lots of really awesome gals and guys there that will be fun getting to know. Like I said monday was move in, so mom and I left after lunch and headed in. My room is SO much bigger then that of holsby! only 1 roomate also. She is interesting, chef by trade, abstract painter, and was upset when she couldnt keep her professional knife set in dorm... which thankfully i am glad! Another then is that she always announces when she walks in the room, its like ok i dont need to know or say hi every time you walk in the room. It will take sometime getting used to, but will deal with it. Maybe she just doesnt know how to react either. Time will tell. CLasses are so far good, and yah there is lots of reading, which i should be doing now! Monday and tuesday afternoon i have classes, Intro to OT, and World Religions, and then Wednesday-Friday classes in the AM. Wednesday is Pop Culture, which should be really really good, Thursday is communications, which should be lots of reading and basically an english class.. Friday is Biblical Interpretations should be good also. SO that is a run down of this semester. It should be really good and I am really looking forward to it! But if you think about it, prayers are still much appreciated and all. Just for classes, dorm life, unity comunity and for learning. So until next time.

Summer 2007

well its come and gone...another week, another day, another summer gone. Needless to say it was good. DIdnt do much, worked a lot, went camping over the weekends, the long weekends. In fact just got back from that, it was a good time other then the swollen ankle and all. So heading off to SBC tomorrow...not sure how to feel about that. LIttle nervous, this and that just want it to be over. Trusting God with it that I am. But whoever reads this if you could send a prayer up for me this and that would be great! Very much appreciated. I will be very happy when the first few days are over. So just a short update but i should be off to bed take care and hopefuly next post willl come from SBC somewhere! until next time
